ETHICAL DILEMA Developed in every childís early years are values that represent basic convictions about what is right and wrong , as he grows surrounded by the moral values of family teachers and friends. I was born in a well educated ,wealthy aristocratic family with itís own traditions and ethical values . I was like any other child ,when at the age of six, destiny robbed me of the person I loved most in the world my father . Tormented as I was by this loss , I was further traumatised by the ugly rituals that my mother was made to undergo by my grandmother all in the name of religion .Disturbed and anguished by these atrocities my mother decided to leave our ancestral house and moved in with her parents who could barely afford to maintain her. --- what to say of her two children one of whom was a toddler---my younger brother. In a years time my grandfather posed before me what was to me at that point of time a most distressing dilemma . He offered me wealth ,a lifetime of luxury and my inheritance only if I agreed to move in with him and abandon my mother .My grandfather with all his wisdom knew that unless the reward or temptation was so great that the offer becomes irresistible. He promised me in a years time he would get my younger brother as well because he knew I adored him. .My dilemma was not so much as to make the choice between my mother and my rightful inheritance --- It was how to convince my grandfather that what he was doing was wrong and get him to realise that kindness , honesty freedom of choice , human values are words that have meaning and deserve respect . I realised at the age of seven that integrity and high standard of ethics require courage and difficult choices . I decided to continue living with my mother ,but requested her to allow me to visit my parental grandparentsí residence .I was determined to literally catch the bull by its horns. I took my grandfather into his study room , where I knew a huge photograph of my was hung on the wall above the table. I had planned all night as to what I would say to my grandparents. My knees were trembling as I knew my grandfather had a terrible temper-- - however I knew what I wanted. Not wealth not luxuries - these to a child do not matter ---I wanted kindness and support for my mother and I wanted to put an end to all the indifference my grandparents were showing towards us. I talked --- and God how I talked. Perhaps the sincerity behind my words was evident because slowly I felt what I was saying had started to influence my grandfather. I told him that I would leave everything - sever all ties if he continued to behave in such a way . I asked him to think - dwell upon the progress society had made, his penchant for latest technology and reminded that he was well educated and widely travelled. I asked him to talk to his conscience and to his God in solitude and wealth and told him that I would come again and asked him to work out things in a manner that humanity demanded. I asked him boldly what he intended to do with my fathers personal wealth . I told him that was the rightful property of my mother and my fathers share of his family wealth should be passed on to us. That was only fair. I left my grandfatherís house that evening knowing that I had taken a big risk. Either I would lose all or gain all. My inner conviction told that given a period of time I could change my grandfather. Today I am seventeen . I live with my mother and my brother and our stepfather . My grandfather divided my fathers individual wealth between four people --- my mother , my parental grandmother ( his wife) ; my brother and me. This was done in accordance to the Hindu Law. My grandfather has been constantly providing for us and he has promised me that he will make arrangements for passing on our family inheritance once I become adult mature enough to deal with it wisely.

EXPERIENCE
The death of a loved one is a traumatic experience more so when faced for the first time & that too a tender age. My father died when I was six years old. I was in school when the office peon came to call me from my classroom. I was told my uncle had come to take me home. My uncle told me that my father had suffered a cardiac arrest while going to office. I was horrified, struck dumb I knew not what to say or ask. It was as if my whole world had come crumbling down. Tears welled up in my eyes as I listened in horror. On reaching home I saw my house swarming with people. My was weeping inconsolably --- she looked shattered, lost, hurt & bewildered --- Destiny had in one stroke robbed her of all she loved. I immediately rushed to her and held her tight. In that moment of crisis I felt that I had to somehow I had to help my mother & baby brother. I would not let the grief and agony shatter my family. I had to face death (which eventually comes to all) with fortitude & courage. What God had taken from us was irreplaceable, yet I knew that I must do all that was humanly possible to bring back the peace & security of my family. This was my first experience with the bitter truth that all we humans must eventually accept "Man is Mortal".

It is difficult to analyse oneís strengths and weaknesses , to describe oneís self objectively without appearing to be a big brag. Putting modesty aside I would like to admit that I have a inquisitive frame of mind coupled with a fair amount of intelligence and ingenuity. My friends find me stimulating because of my ready wit and good humour. My teachers have always appreciated my academic capabilities and passion for work I uphold and value qualities such as integrity and honesty. I have always felt that all humans owe it to each other and to be socially responsible. I respect and admire those who have contributed to society and to the world and with their capabilities, talents, knowledge and skills. I believe hard work, perseverance and will power are the pre-requisites for the achievement of all ambitions in life. However what is most important is integrity of character, for it ensures that overvaulting ambitions donít erode our values and principles. I have always been willing to work hard; to walk the extra mile to put in my best to achieve my ambitions in life. To be sincere I would have to admit that I normally donít act on impulse for I am a person who likes to reason out things and take only those steps in life that are feasible, well thought out and planed. Yet I have taken certain risk in life and have learnt valuable lessons from doing so Life brings with itself myriad experiences which are challenging; strange; at times even traumatic and one often reacts to them to the best of oneís abilities. I feel winners are those who demonstrate character compassion, sense of fairness, determination dynamism .Remarkable traits arenít they ? I hope to exhibit them in my passage through life for these are the traits I admire and am determined to inculcate in myself .
